Happy, Healthy and Gluten-Free!

Welcome to the road to feeling better! Maybe you have gas, bloating, or a host of other gastrointestinal issues. Maybe you have "brain fog" or pain and tingling in your extremities. Maybe you have some unexplained nutritional deficiencies. Or maybe you just don't feel as good as you know you could. For some folks, the answer lies in an intolerance or autoimmune reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and foods and drinks made with them.

As a person with celiac disease and the Director of Communications for the non-profit org Beyond Celiac, I can't say this enough: If you have symptoms or are at risk, I recommend asking your doctor to have you tested celiac disease before you go gluten-free. Here's a full checklist of symptoms and the tests you should ask for. And now there's even a home-based blood test if you want to get started without going to your doctor first.

If you do need to be gluten-free (and maybe vegan like me or vegetarian to boot), "So What CAN you eat?" is frequently the question we get asked. The good news is that we can eat LOTS of things! The bad news is that gluten lurks in unexpected places and we need to maintain rigor in making sure that the food and drinks we have won't make us sick.

This website is devoted to helping you live a happy, gluten-free life. More and more restaurants are offering gluten-free menus and options, and there are more gluten-free prepared foods on grocery store shelves all the time. Even with greater societal awareness around gluten challenges, the true path to gluten-free happiness and health is acknowledging your situation and making the decision to be in charge of what you put into your body.

I have numerous resources and links on this site to help you as you navigate your world. I also talk a lot about creating the life and future you want for yourself. Enjoy the journey, I say! I certainly welcome you on mine.

I'm also the creator of www.recirculations.com, which is a hybrid storytelling/bike resale operation. I update it in fits and starts -- I've found that it's not a great way to sell used bikes! But I do enjoy the story-telling when I have time.
